CABRERA A, Francisco J y GARCIA C, Gisela C. Mucins of the Male Genital Tract of the Spectacled Cayman (Caiman crocodilus crocodilus). Rev. Fac. Cienc. Vet. [online]. 2007, vol.48, n.2, pp.77-84. ISSN 0258-6576.
A histochemical study of mucins from the male spermatic tract of the spectacled cayman was carried out. Nine mature spectacled caymans were used. Samples of the genital tract were stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin; PAS; PAS-Amylase; and PAS-Alcian Blue. This last stain used two different pH values (1. 0 and 2.5). The following findings were evidenced: 1. A positive PAS reaction at the caudal epididymis; 2. A positive reaction to PAS and PAS-Alcian Blue at both pHs in the seminal coliculus, the ejaculatory ductus and the dorsal aspect of the penis, which demonstrates the presence of neutral mucins, sialomucins and sulphomucins, respectively; and 3. A positive reaction to PAS and PAS-Alcian Blue at pH 2.5, on both the dorsal and ventral surface of the penis, confirming the presence of neutral mucins and sialomucins. The possible physiological correlations are discussed, taking into consideration the absence of annexe sexual glands in this species
