Abstract

KRIVOY, Saúl. Microcirugía trans-esfenoidal de la hipófisis: Revisión de 400 casos. Gac Méd Caracas [online]. 2002, vol.110, n.1, pp.65-70. ISSN 0367-4762.

Pituitary tumors are among the most common intracranial neoplasias (10 to 15%). The purpose of this study is to present the author’s experience in the surgical management of 400 pituitary tumors based on the study protocols utilized in the Pituitary Units of the Miguel Perez Carreño and University Hospital and the author’s private practice. It presents the more frequent findings and diagnostic techniques, highlighting the role of MRI and cerebral angiography. Trans-sphenoidal and trans-cranial surgical techniques were analyzed. The advantage of the trans-sphenoidal technique is presented, as well as the improvements made to the surgical technique and the use of neuroendoscopy. The importance of a multi-specialty team is stressed. This experience allowed to reduce the associated morbidity and mortality by shortening surgical time and improving recovery. This translated into a more rapid return to regular activities, better quality of life and prognosis for the patient
