In the Caracas Longitudinal Study, data from 39 adolescents belonging to the 12 year-old cohort, were analyzed to study the relationship among four consecutive samples of dietary protein and blood pressure systolic and diastolic, controlling for maturation, body mass index, and calorie intake. The analysis was based on the generalized estimating equation model that simultaneously examined cross-sectional and longitudinal relationship between the explanatory variables and blood pressure. The results showed that changes in protein intake were inversely and significantly associated with the changes in the average diastolic blood pressure. Broad improvement in nutrition can be important in preventing and controlling high blood pressure.
