PEREZ, Candelaria et al. Tasa de mortalidad de la esclerosis múltiple en Venezuela según edad y género. Gac Méd Caracas [online]. 2003, vol.111, n.3, pp.227-230. ISSN 0367-4762.
The multiple sclerosis or sclerosis in plate, is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, of unknown etiology. 0.1 percent of the population of Central Europa suffers from it. It is present in young adults betwen the ages 20-40 and more frequent in females, with a 2:1 proportion. The incidence is lower in African and Asian groups. In the present study our goal is to determine the rate of mortality of the multiple sclerosis in Venezuela, according to gender and age betwen 1988 and 1998. The information of the number of deaths was obtained from the epidemiological yearbooks of the Ministry of Health and Social Development. Our results are in agreement with those in the world-wide population, with greater rate of mortality in the females and onset between the 11 to 19 years of age.
