On October 1996 the National Council of Universities decided that the accreditation of the university postgrades is mandadatory.     Considering the legal importance, economic benefits and academic productivity, the comission for graduate studies from the Faculty of Medicine, Central University of Venezuela, decided to support it, as a priority, with the help of all means available to that purpose.     As head of the general surgery postgrade in the Caracas University Hospital, from 1994 to 1999, we tried to meet all the requirements, until it was definetely approved on May 4, 2001 for a period of 3 years. It was the 5th accredited postgrade out of the 31 postgrades dictated at the same hospital.     The advantages are: 1. The national and international recognition. 2. Economical benefits to the comission of graduate studies and for the students. 3. Substancial academic and teaching benefits to the accredited programs
