GUERRA, María Elena; TOVAR, Vilma  y  BLANCO-CEDRES, Lucila. VIH/SIDA: Lesiones bucales en niños de 0 a 4 años de edad. Gac Méd Caracas [online]. 2005, vol.113, n.4, pp.500-505. ISSN 0367-4762.

Children don’t escape from the infection caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, being the vertical transmission their main mode of infection. In the literature, it has been established that the presence of oral lesions is indicative of the progress of the infection. The objective of this study was to determine the risk to present oral lesions in children HIV/AIDS whose mothers were HIV seropositive. An instrument was designed to determine social variables and to evaluate oral lesions. 59 children were examined aged 0 to 4 years, products of mothers human immunodeficiency virus (+), of whom 32 were HIV/AIDS and 27 were human immunodeficiency virus (-), vertically exposed. Analysis concerning proportions was based on the Fisher exact test. Hierarchical cluster was applied being identified two groups: "High" number of oral lesions and "Low" number of oral lesions. Logistic regression model was used to determine the association between oral lesions and presence of HIV/AIDS controlling for the effect of age. The results showed that the risk ratio for children HIV/AIDS compared to those human immunodeficiency virus (-) was 7 for presence of oral lesions. The presence of oral lesions as a clinical sign that evidence the progress of the infection for HIV/AIDS, gives relevance to the dentistry in the diagnosis and handling of the infection.
