Serous retinal detachment is an unusual complication of the hypertensive disorder in pregnancy. It has been reported in 1 % to 2 % of patients with severe preeclampsia and 10 % with eclampsia and is usually bilateral. In this condition choroidal ischemia induced by vasospasm may be severe compromising the retinal-pigmentary epithelium barrier and resulting in serous retinal detachment. Most patients with retinal detachment in pregnancy- induced hypertension have had full spontaneous resolution within a few weeks, and they did not have any visual sequelae but residual pigmentary changes of the retinal pigment epithelium. The natural history of the condition is shown in sequential fluorescein angiography studies in a 31 year-old pregnant patient.
