abstract This paper aims to propose and evaluate the accuracy of an analysis procedure for determining the critical elastic response of structures to two horizontal acceleration seismic components that may have different spectral shapes. The smoothed spectra for the major and the minor component of a given ensemble of recorded ground motions were used to calculate the critical structural response that is defined as the largest value of response for all possible incident angles of the two horizontal components. The CQC3-rule using a constant-spectral intensity ratio, g c, given by the average of the two spectral intensity ratios corresponding to the modes with the largest contribution to horizontal seismic motion along the two reference axes of the structure, is used to estimate the critical response. Parametric analyses of one story buildings as well as numerical analyses of two multistory buildings indicate that the CQC3-rule using g c predicts results within 5% of the critical response pointing out the accuracy of the proposed procedure for structural design
