An attempt is made to depict the gender condition in science in Venezuela. The study concentrates on information from representative institutions of different segments and levels of activity. The basic assumption is that only when information compiled at these strategic levels is accumulated, it will be possible to rely on a more general, exact and useful data source for the elaboration of policy and for monitoring the evolution of gender equity and of the domestic scientific activity proper. Meanwhile, the institutional level, when considered from the perspective of different contexts of science-related activity, provides a particularly significant interpretive richness. Gender dynamics is analyzed in public and private higher education, R&D centers and in the national scientific activity, considering a representative group of higher education and R&D Venezuelan institutions. Documents obtained from specific case studies based on interviews to female researchers in different disciplines and institutions are commented, and the topic of authority and power of women in the academic and R&D contexts today are discussed.
