Recent assessments about environmental education (EE) regarding the conservation of the biological diversity in Venezuela show important failures that hamper the efficiency of these programs. Paradoxically this is one of the areas in which the biggest effort has been made in the country. For this reason, it is important to reflect about the factors that influence these programs and propose guidelines to promote a better efficiency in the fulfillment of biodiversity conservation objectives. A social approach of environment and EE was used, showing a series of factors that can affect the efficiency of these programs, including the use of educational models based on the vertical transference of culturally biased information, the presentation of biodiversity information as a rationalist discourse, the existence of a hidden curriculum diffusing an economy-oriented vision of the environment, and the omission of presenting problems related with power and development as a biodiversity issue. Based on these ideas, guidelines that can lead to the educational interventions associated to the conservation of biodiversity are proposed.
