The object of this work, was to demonstrate if a recognized ligninolytic fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium would be able to 1) tolerate high styrene concentrations, and 2) remove styrene in a liquid culture. It was observed that the fungus was able to grow at low (200mg/l) and relatively high concentrations (1500mg/l). It was shown that 40 and 46% of styrene was biodegraded, respectively, in 35 days. However, 30 and 53% was removed by volatilization. Detection of peroxidase activity on the fungal culture containing styrene at two concentration may imply its participation in the biodegradation of this type of compound. Benzoic acid was detected in the culture as a degradation product.
