A socioeconomic analysis of the fishermen living on the shores of the five counties surrounding the Gulf of Cariaco was undertaken. Information was gathered by means of questionnaires handed out by surveyors in 44 settlements. The research revealed that, due to natural or human factors, the dwellers on the north coast of the gulf, who constitute the great majority of the 745 families living on both sides of it, are at a disadvantage when compared to those living on the south shore. The contraction of fishing activity in the area, and in particular the shrinking yield of the sardine, their main resource, have resulted in negative migratory movements and in a shifting away from fishing to other occupational practices.
