Abstract
DA SILVA MOURAO, José and NORDI, Nivaldo. Comparações entre as taxonomias folk e científica para peixes do estuário do rio mamanguape, paraíba-brasil. INCI [online]. 2002, vol.27, n.12, pp.664-668. ISSN 0378-1844.
Summary This work was carried out at two communities of artisanal fishermen: Barra de Mamanguape and Tramataia, at the margins of the estuary of the Mamanguape river (ERM), northern coast of Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil. Its purpose was to study the classificatory system used by of the fishermen. The methodology used consisted of free interviews, questionnaires and crossed and repeated identifications. The results showed that fishermen group the fish by similarities and differences, producing a system of hierarchical classification with four levels of decreasing order of taxonomic pertinence: reign, form-of-life, generic and specific. Most of the generic taxa are monotypic (77%) excluding any taxon of lower order. The other 23% generic politypics that are subdivided in folk specifics, referred to fish of cultural importance. Usually the differentiation criteria used in the ethnobiological classification of the politypic generics agreed with those utilized to differentiate the species in the scientific ictiological classification, obtaining a high equivalence (71%) between the generic folk and the scientific species.
