Summary To evaluate the most commonly used procedures to analyze natural feeding in fish by researchers in the field, a survey was carried out on papers published between 1996 to 2001 in 23 periodical publications, analyzing the methods and feeding index employed. In the 218 papers consulted the use of one or two methods was the most frequent procedure used to evaluate the diet. When only a single method was used, the gravimetric one was preferred and when two were employed, the frequency of occurrence associated with a quantitative method predominated. Only 27.6% of the papers employed a feeding index and the most frequently used were the Feeding Index (IAi) and the Index of Relative Importance (IRI). The former was registered mainly in national periodicals whereas the second in international ones.
