Summary     While biotechnology is a human activity initiated at the origins of agriculture and cattle raising, its progress during the last thirty years has been extraordinary. As modern biotechnology diversifies its scope and its social, economical and ethical implications, the need has arisen to generate policies for the promotion of its development and application. Undoubtedly, one of the most important instruments in the generation, transfer and diffusion of the applications of this human activity is the management of intellectual property. The present essay describes the relevance of this tool from a Mexican perspective and presents an overview of the recent evolution of intellectual property and the international agreements for the protection of living matter.
