In search for natural alternatives of plant disease control, mid sections of stems of Cereus deficiens (Cactaceae) collected at El Tocuyo, Lara State, Venezuela, were subjected to ethanolic degreased (EDE), ethanol non-degreased (ENDE) and aqueous (AE) extractions. Secondary metabolites were determined qualitatively in EDE and the effect of extracts on mycelial growth of 10 plant pathogenic fungi was tested. The latter test was performed at extraxct concentrations of 0, 25, 50 and 75%. Results indicated the presence of essential oils, polyphenols, tanins and saponins. There was a significant effect (P<0.001) of the extracts in reducing mycelial growth of all tested fungi, especially Phytophthora infestans and Sclerotium rolfsii, where the extracts caused 70-94% reduction. The largest effect was shown by EDE and ENDE. Growth reduction increased as did the extract concentration. Results indicate the potential of C. deficiens as a controller of plant pathogenic fungi
