Abstract

FLORES, Coral Contreras; PENA-CASTRO, Julián Mario; FLORES-COTERA, Luis Bernardo  and  CANIZARES-VILLANUEVA, Rosa Olivia. Avances en el diseño conceptual de fotobiorreactores para el cultivo de microalgas. INCI [online]. 2003, vol.28, n.8, pp.450-456. ISSN 0378-1844.

During the last decade, many different photobioreactor types have been used for culturing autotrophic microorganisms like microalgae and cyanobacteria. Advances in reactor design allowed considerable improvements of cellular density, productivity and overall economy of cultures for diverse purposes. In this paper, several important photobioreactor design concepts are reviewed, including those involved with adequate use of light energy (light/dark cycles, light path and reactor geometry) as well as those based in physiological concepts (oxygen photoinhibition, high cell density cultures, ultra high density cultures, heterotrophy and mixotrophy). A brief account of the current applications of new photobioreactors in fine chemicals production and possible uses in environmental biotechnology is made.
