GOCHE-TELLES, Rodolfo et al. Densidad básica y ancho de anillos de la madera de Pinus patula antes y después de un aclareo . INCI [online]. 2003, vol.28, n.12, pp.705-709. ISSN 0378-1844.
Thinning effect was evaluated on wood density and ring width in Pinus patula stands. Wood cores were collected at 1.3m height in two site quality forests (3 and 5yr after thinning). Each sample was analyzed as to wood density and basic density of growth rings. Both site quality and thinning did not influence wood density. Absolute wood density values were 0.45 and 0.44g·cm-3 for high site quality before and after thinning, respectively, while in low site quality, absolute wood density values were 0.47 and 0.44g·cm-3, before and after thinning, respectively. In low site quality ring width was affected significantly by thinning with average values of 3.26mm and 2.89mm before and after thinning, respectively. In high site quality there were significant differences in ring width, with values of 2.52 and 2.20 before and after thinning, respectively. Thinning did not affect wood density because variation is present in early years of growth.
