Abstract

ORTIZ CEBALLOS, Gustavo et al. Análisis comparativo de la producción - demanda del café en el Mercado Internacional (1980-2003) . INCI [online]. 2004, vol.29, n.11, pp.621-625. ISSN 0378-1844.

The trends on the international price of coffee are described and compared in relation to the international supply and demand of coffee. The behavior of international prices, exportable production, and demand during 1980-2003 was analyzed by country and type of coffee. The classification of the International Coffee Organization (ICO) in Soft Colombianos, Other Soft, Other Arábicas and Robusta types was used. It was found that while the exportable production and the demand for other Softs have increased, the prices of all types of coffee have declined and remained below the 1980’s maximum. However, exports of Other Arabicas, Other Soft, and Robusta types have increased, making unfeasible a significant rise of the international price in the short or mediate term, despite the 41% decline in the production of the Other Arabicas in the 2003-2004 cycle compared to 2002-2003. Furthermore, the per capita consumption of coffee has increased only in Japan.
