Abstract

The growth and dependence on arbuscular mycorrhiza of the pioneer and pollenectarizing species Oyedaea verbesinoides was quantified. Seeds of plants growing in a successional shrubland situated in Altos de Pipe, Miranda State, Venezuela, were collected. Pre-germinated seedlings were transplanted to plastic pots filled with sterilized forest soil. Four treatments with five replicates were performed in a greenhouse. The treatments consisted of inoculation with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus manihotis (AM), inoculation with AM and fertilization with triple superphosphate (46%), plants fertilized with triple superphosphate and untreated control plants. After seventy days the roots, stems and leaves of all the plants were harvested. The results indicate a high response to mycorrhizal colonization and mycorrhizal dependency of this species. The inoculation produced a biomass increment of 566% as compared to the non inoculated treatment and of 46% as compared to the phosphate fertilized treatment. A significant increase was found in the contents and concentrations of P, N, K, Ca and Mg in plant tissue. Total root length was measured and lower specific length was found in the mycorrhizal plants in comparison with the non inoculated ones. The results do not support the view of other authors in relation to the mycorrhizal condition of pioneer spec ies in the tropics.
