The windmill represented the most widely used technology for extracting wheat flour until the twentieth century. The mediterranean windmill is studied from the point of view of engineering and compared with the La Mancha windmill. A windmill from Campo de Níjar, Almería, Spain, has been reconstructed from sketches, photographs and measurements, and modelled using computer aided design (CAD) techniques. Computer animation has also been employed to establish the windmill operation. At the same time, it is intended to pay tribute to Don Quixote in the fourth centenary of the masterpiece in Spanish literature, which presents a Spanish landscape drawn by windmills.
