Abstract

Grafting products of various agents (diethylmaleate, maleic anhydride, decyl mono itaconate and acrylamide) onto ethylene-a-olefin copolymers of varying comonomer type (1-butene, 1-hexene) were studied. All functionalizations were carried out in solution. Insertion of the grafting agents was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermal fractionation was carried out using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) employing successive self-nucleation and annealing technique (SSA). Morphology studies and the lamellar detail were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of chlorosulphonic stained samples. Fractionation studies revealed differences among the various products in their melting behaviour. In some products the extent of side reactions is larger than in others. Microscopy studies confirmed that insertion of grafting agents is accompanied by the formation of thinner lamellae.
