Abstract

A digital image’s raw format contains geometric distortions originated at their acquisition. They can not be used directly as a map, but require of a process known as georectification, which needs ground control points (GCP) recognized both in the image and in the corresponding terrain position. This allows to obtain an image with the geometric integrity of a map. The research considered analysis and evaluation of several mathematical models for the georectification process. Three panchromatic digital images of the IKONOS platform, property of Petróleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) were used. The images cover a surface of 330km2of the operative area of OleoLUZ (a subsidiary of PDVSA), located at the north of Maracaibo city. GCPs used for georectification were obtained by GPS measurement. The georectification of images were done with PCI Geomatics V.8.2.1 software. Tests performed showed that 3rd order polynomials were the most adequate mathematical models, obtaining georectificated images with residuals of less than ±1m.
