Free radicals, or reactive oxygen species (ROS), are produced during normal cell activity as a consequence of metabolic processes and exogenous sources such as intense exercise, stress, environmental factors and polluting agents (drugs and pesticides). A free radical is a molecule or atom that contains one or more unpaired electrons. When ROS production is excessive it causes oxidative stress, which might damage cellular structures including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates and DNA. Oxidative damage has been involved in many diseases that affect humans and animals. This paper reviews different aspects related to oxidative stress and the use of antioxidants in domestic animals.
