Abstract

We present an overview of events and on-going discussions in the International academic community with respect to free and open knowledge. We argue againts the alleged rights of the publishing houses to prevent the preservation and distribution of academic knowledge by the institutions that produce it. As a example of an alternative and sustainable innitiative to preserve and distribute academic creations, we present a web-enable Institutional Repository at www.saber.ula.ve <http://www.saber.ula.ve/>. We do so, by explaining our experiences and trying to draw a few methological recommendations for capturing, managing and distributing knowledge produce by a University, based in a effort that has last already five years. To this effect, some statistical evidence of that operation is also shown.
