This paper gives an overview of general biotechnological procedures for the improvement of agronomical characteristics of plants using DNA recombinant technologies. Transgenic plants have been obtained which show resistance to insects, fungi, bacteria and herbicides, high nutritional value and improved quality traits during pre and post harvest. Special emphasis is placed on efforts to improve mango through biotechnology, given that very few improved mango cultivars have been released during the past two decades. Some assays involved studies on the induction of efficient embryo induction during somatic embryogenesis and on plant recovery, the random induction of mutants to obtain resistance to selective agents, and the transformation by genes that regulate given horticultural traits. Biotechnology has a high potential to provide alternative solutions to the problems claimed by mango producers as well as other horticultural producers.
