Summary The mangrove ecosystems which surround the La Mancha lagoon in Veracruz, Mexico, are characterized by the high complexity of its landscapes in conditions of adequate conservation. This work deals on the structure and composition of the geocomplexes of this area. The use of structural-genetic and historical-evolutionary principles permitted the survey, classification and cartography of mangrove landscapes at a detailed scale. It was possible to differentiate 28 inferior units, six intermediate units and five of a superior order, all at the scale of 1:25 000. The results suggested that the physical-geographical approach complex could be of great use for the inventory, characterization and cartography of mangroves at a detailed scale, providing information on the genetic type of the relief, litological composition, periodicity of flooding of surface areas, vegetative cover and soils. This information is invaluable for the environmental planning and preservation of these ecosystems
