MONTBRUN, Nila; RASTELLI, Víctor; OLIVER, Karen  e  CHACON, Rosa. MEASUREMENT OF THE IMPACT PRODUCED BY SHORT DURATION OCCASIONAL NOISES. INCI [online]. 2006, vol.31, n.6, pp.411-416. ISSN 0378-1844.

National and local laws presently enforced in Venezuela concerning environmental noise contamination utilize parameters that do not detect sporadic short duration noises. The parameter currently employed, the statistical level L10, records sound levels that exceed 10% of the measurement time and does not allow detection of individually disturbing noises of lower duration. A noise survey was made using the Sound Exposure Level (SEL), internationally applied to evaluate noise produced by trains, helicopters and airplanes. Measuring times of 15min per hour were established and noise bursts of 20s at 70dBA were applied. Three study cases were analyzed, showing that this kind of noise, even when being intermittent, is not detected by the usual measurement methods while being able to cause important disturbances that are not considered at present. This study shows that SEL should be included as an additional parameter to measure this type of noise and to establish the corresponding permissible levels, discriminated by type of areas and periods (day or night).
