Abstract

C.E. RODRIGUEZ, Luiz  and  DIAZ-BALTEIRO, Luis. OPTIMAL COPPICE REGIMES FOR EUCALYPTUS IN BRAZIL: A NON DETERMINISTIC ANALYSIS. INCI [online]. 2006, vol.31, n.10, pp.739-744. ISSN 0378-1844.

Distinct from other plantations, Eucalyptus plantation managers have to decide whether all trees will be replaced by new seedlings after a harvest or simply allowed to regenerate from the sprouting stumps. Defining the length and the number of rotations in this type of coppice regime is not a trivial task. In most cases, the optimal sequence of rotations, or optimal coppice regime, is not implemented. This paper considers the non-determinism of several parameters affecting the decisions, and applies dynamic programming and Monte Carlo simulation to define the optimal coppice regime of Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. The results show how the optimal recommendation is significantly affected by changes in the hypothesized parameters.
