Ethology is the science which studies animal behavior. It is as old as man, although it has only been in recent years that its importance has been recognized, when Lorenz, Tinbergen and von Frish were awarded the Nobel Prize of medicine and physiology in 1973. The importance of the knowledge about animal behavior to improve animal production when it is applied to nutrition programs, reproduction, animal housing design, animal handling, transport and slaughter, has been demonstrated in several studies with domestic animals, which are reviewed in the present article.
