Resumen

DE LA CRUZ-GONZALEZ, Francisco J et al. Socio-economic analysis of shrimp and jumbo squid fisheries in Northeastern Mexico. INCI [online]. 2007, vol.32, n.3, pp.144-150. ISSN 0378-1844.

This study provides a socio-economic analysis of the jumbo squid and shrimp fisheries in the northwest of Mexico. Both fisheries are placed in the context of their origins and export practices, in order to argue that these factors have influenced the dynamics of exploitation of those resources. Catch performance and production value for jumbo squid and shrimp fishery are described. It is concluded that, although these resources provide employment and income, they are not the solution for structural problems of fishing activities in the region, as there are biological and market factors that must be considered so that both fisheries contribute to the growth of the local fishing activity in a sustainable and socially productive manner.
