Resumen

HERRERA-LOPEZ, David; RINDERKNECHT-SEIJAS, Noemí  y  POGGI-VARALDO, Héctor M.. A GENERALIZATION OF THE SERIES AND PARALLEL-SERIES REACTION MODEL FOR COMPLETE MIX REACTORS. INCI [online]. 2007, vol.32, n.5, pp.324-327. ISSN 0378-1844.

This paper is organized in five lemmas. In the first three lemmas, the model of consecutive series first order reactions in a continuous stirred tank reactor (liquid phase) is generalized. Normalized concentrations of chemical species involved, as well as the maximum concentration of species A2 and the hydraulic retention time tA2,max at which concentration occurs were given by simple algebraic equations. The last two lemmas focused on deriving general equations for the array of parallel-series reactions in complete mix reactors. It was found that there are algebraic equations for the normalized concentrations of species A1, A2 and A2’, and a general equation for any intermediate products from the third step and beyond, as well as equations for the maximum normalized concentrations of A2 and A’2 and the corresponding hydraulic retention times tA2,max and tA’2,max at which they occur. Finally, simulations of the reductive dechlorination of perchloroethylene (series reaction) in a methanogenic fluidized bed bioreactor, as well as reductive dechlorination of 2,4,6-Trichlorophenol (parallel-series reaction array), were carried out. Both simulations predicted reasonably well concentrations for PCE, 2,4,6-TCP and their corresponding intermediate products compared with experimental results of the literature. It is concluded that the generalized models of series and parallel-series first order reactions may be useful for modeling some applications of wastewater treatment of halogenated organic compounds.
