Abstract
LAINES CANEPA, José Ramón; GONI AREVALO, Jorge Alberto; ADAMS SCHROEDER, Randy Howard and CAMACHO CHIU, Wilder. Mixtures with clotting potential for the treatment of leachates of a sanitary landfill. INCI [online]. 2008, vol.33, n.1, pp.22-28. ISSN 0378-1844.
In the handling of solid wastes an alternative is the sanitary landfill site, which is a problem since the generated leachate represents a water and soil pollution risk. The coagulation-floculation potential of mixtures with variable proportions of banana starch, aluminum Sulfate and clays (LASA 55; LASA 73; LASAB 23530 and LASAR 23530) was determined. In order to evaluate the clotting effectiveness controls were run with aluminum sulfate and ferric chloride. The leachate was pre-treated and jar tests were performed, measuring turbidity, color, chemical demand of oxygen (DQO), pH, total suspended solids (SST) and conductivity. Turbidity decreased to <5UNT with 75mg·l-1 in two treatments (LASA 55 and aluminum sulfate). The largest color removal was obtained with ferric chloride, followed by LASA 55 and aluminum sulfate, LASAB 23530 and LASA 73, the lowest being that with LASAR 23530. The mixtures based on starch plus aluminum sulfate showed a low DQO removal and, in comparison with LASAR, the conventional coagulants presented a better removal. A very similar correlation was observed with SST and conductivity. The results allowed to establish the feasibility of applying mixtures with clotting properties for leachates treatment and for future tests in the treatment of industrial or municipal residual waters.
