Abstract

FIGUEROA, Juana R  and  CASTILLA GUTIERREZ, Carlos. Economical valuation of trees with medicinal use in the high basin of botanamo river, bolivar state, venezuela.. INCI [online]. 2008, vol.33, n.3, pp.194-199. ISSN 0378-1844.

This work was aimed at evaluating the arboreal species with medicinal uses from an ecological and economic perspective in the high basin of the Botanamo River, a tributary to the Cuyuní River in Bolívar State, Venezuela, in lands that include part of the Imataca Forest Reserve. Quantitative (contingent valuation) and qualitative (verbal semi-structured interviews) methodology was used. Results show that 62.5% of the interviewed families consider of value the existence of trees with medicinal use and 55.2% states that the permanent loss of medicinal-use trees, as well as other goods and services provided by the forest, is irreversible and has infinite cost. The average monthly amount declared for the will to pay was Bs. 15,025 (BsF 15.03, equivalent to USD6.99), which would be paid to an institution devoted to the protection of the Imataca Forest Reserve to insure the permanence of trees with medicinal properties in the high basin of the Botanamo River
