The evaluation and selection system of university professors in those countries which hold the ten highest positions in the world academic ranking system developed by the Institute of Higher Education is examined. It also analyzes the relationship between the type of system (centralized vs non-centralized) of each country and the number of universities in the ranking. Results show that, although there is no association between the type of system and the number of universities/100000 inhabitants from each country, the ranking reflects higher scores for countries with non-centralized systems. The main findings suggest the importance of the selection system to determine the productivity of universities.
