The "Programa de Promoción del Investigador" (PPI), established in 1990, constitutes an obligatory reference in the evaluation of the scientific research activities in Venezuela. After a brief historical review of its creation, an analysis of the most relevant characteristics registered in its seventeen years of existence is presented. Emphasis is placed on: a) the increasing participation of researchers of official and private institutions of higher education and research and development centers of the country, being the universities the institutions that concentrate the greater representation; b) the sharp growth registered in the number of accredited investigators, who reached a total, in 2007, of 5222 amongst the several fields of knowledge; c) the positive variations registered in the rate of interannual growth, which experiences an evident inflexion point from 2002 onwards, probably related to the changes in evaluation criteria between 2001 and 2002, causing an increase in the rate of growth from 10% in 1990-2001 to 22.09% in 2002-2007. Also, the impact of the project is analyzed by type of institution, area of knowledge, level of accreditation and regional impact, as well as the incidence of the age and gender variables.
