In this paper the taxonomy of dialectal levelings is analyzed and the possibility of a third type brought about by electrotexts, particularly, those coming from chatting on the Internet and mobile phone text messages. The proposal that these texts represent a third medium of language in contrast with the oral and written ones is rejected. Dialectal classification is modified by the inclusion of dialectal species. With Spanish and English data, the abbreviation processes of electrotexts are explained, on the basis of the disparity between obstruents and sonorants in the phonemic inventories of natural languages.
