In this analysis two ways of understanding the problem of evil in Inés Arredondo’s short stories “La Sunamita”  and “Sombra entre sombras” are explored. The asumption that leads this exploration is that the distinction between the symbols pure/impure organizes the discourse of the stories and structures the sense of guilt/sin and good/evil with a higher degree of abstraction. This distinction allows the author to search beyond the modern meta-stories and go deep further into the sense of good and evil of a specific time and situation. Besides appealing to symbolism to foreground the tension between the above dichotomies, Arredondo makes use of metaphoric expressions in order to relate cultural discourses and also to question values. The same discursive organization allows the reader to understand the theme within its complexity. In order to develop this study, concepts from narratology and developments in hermeneutics have been employed.
