This work aims at presenting a general overview of current approaches in the teaching of second languages: the communicative, the intercultural and the bilingual socio-cultural approaches. In this sense, their aims, objectives and the importance of aspects such as language functionality, culture, values and the identity of involved communities are explained as fundamental aspects to be considered in second language classrooms. The benefits of the application of such ideas are also foregrounded. Researchers in the area have made evident, through their sustained works, that the consideration of such aspects would maximize the learner’s linguistic competence, which is the main concern within the pedagogical perspective. This work is framed within the documentary research type. Methodologically, the stages of bibliography review, information analysis and characterization of essential aspects of each approach were followed.
