This study attempts to describe the contextualizing or anaphoric value of the adverb with mente in Venezuelan Spanish. Starting from diverse corpora from Venezuelan speech, and with support on the postulates of the functional grammar of Spanish, the semantic and pragmatic value of these units is analyzed on the extra-verbal plane, the incidental function. To do so, the outline of the utterance and the situational context of its occurrence have been considered. From this perspective, and from the data analyzed, the study reveals the presence of proper modals, discursive values as evaluation of what is being uttered, and utterance, context, viewpoints and meta-communicative modalizers; all these beyond their notional content. Finally, the work demonstrates the insufficiency of the syntactic outline of the sentence, as well as the importance of the extra-predicative plane of the utterance in order to explain the multiple and various functional values of the adverb with mente
