In order to achieve an effective communication the patient and his/her interlocutor use conversational repairs (from now on CR); this term refers to the efforts that both healthy interlocutor and patient use to correct and solve problems in the comprehension or hearing of a message.  The objective of this research was to compare the use of CR by dementia or aphasia patients and their interlocutors in the context of a conversation, and to analyze how the use of CR (by both parties) has an influence in the construction of coherence and cohesion of the speech. In order to achieve the forenamed objective, a comparative qualitative study was designed. According with the results of this study, we can conclude that there is a difference in the intention of use of CR by both interlocutors; they use this process as an alternative to achieve an adequate cohesion and thus to achieve coherence.
