Resumen

GONZALEZ, Jorge Enrique  y  ALGARA, Andrés. He postnuclear nasal phoneme in spanish: A diachronic study . Letras [online]. 2009, vol.51, n.80, pp.117-136. ISSN 2791-1179.

Some varieties of Spanish in the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America and the Caribbean are featured by the velarization of the postnuclear nasal phoneme (Chela-Flores 2002 y 1980, D’Introno, Del Teso and Weston 1995, D’Introno and Sosa 1988, Lipsky 1994, Obediente 2005, Zamora and Guitart 1982). In this work a hypothesis is proposed about the origin and development of velarization of nasal consonants at the end of the syllable, on the basis of the study of the evolution of the Spanish nasal system, from Latin to modern Spanish, as well as the behavior of postnuclear nasals in some Spanish dialects (Peninsular and American) and of other romance languages in which the nasal at the end of the syllable or word is velarized. The proposed hypothesis y consistent with a universal view of the phonetological change and with the data analyzed. After a process of fortition (similar to that suggested by Hajek 1997) that would give origin to the velar nasal occlusive segment, from the consonantization of the nasal slide, a weakening would be produced, which would lead to the total loss of the nasal consonant.

Palabras clave : phonetological change; velarization; postnuclear nasal phoneme; dialectology of Spanish.
