The aim of this work is to propose, on the basis of some ideological and linguistic notions, a framework of what the course Lengua Española should be at the Universidad Pedagógica Experimental Libertador (UPEL). To achieve this, the statements of several authors (Uslar Pietri, 1973; Rosenblat, 1986; and Páez Urdaneta, 1987; Morin, 1980; Fabelo Corzo, 1999; Cassany, 1989 and 1990; Crystal, 2005; Fraca, 2006, among others) have been reviewed as well as national legislation on this matter. The results indicate that there is a problem to be solved so that the Venezuelan citizen reach, and get committed to, a more equitable and fair society: great part of the students who finish high school show language weaknesses that prevent them from being cognitively free. Thus, the school must introduce changes that promote the formation of free men and women with command of language.
