This is an investigation that makes use of some of the tools that have been employed, till now, in attempts to study the Romance of modern oral tradition, and that are representatives of a very delicate poetics as precepted by Menéndez Pidal, Diego Catalán and many others by many years. A comparative study of different versions of the same poem allows us to ascertain the degree to which renewal and preservation, two axes of this Romance, with their different tendencies, affect the continuity of tradition, that is to say, of the traces of old romances. The aim of this work is to show an example of how useful the comparative method can be for the study of poetry of modern oral tradition.
