Abstract

ADOUMIEH COCONAS, Nour. Appraisal patterns of students in regards to the process of writing: a study of the semantic dominion of attitude. Letras [online]. 2013, vol.55, n.89, pp.61-88. ISSN 0459-1283.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the changes in the appraisal patterns of university students in regards to the writing process after a pedagogical intervention. The paper has its bases on the Appraisal Theory and on writing as a process approach. Methodologically it is founded on the qualitative paradigm, by means of a case study. The corpus is made of five (05) in depth interviews conducted with students of the course Lengua Española. Three (03) analytical matrixes were designed, one for each of the subsystems: affect, judgment and appreciation of the semantic domain of attitude. After applying metalinguistic strategies, there were noticeable changes in the writing products, as well as in the attitudes towards this productive skill, which mostly manifested itself as appreciation comments about awareness raising, use of drafts, presence of audience, external readers, and revision.

Keywords : attitude; Appraisal Theory; writing.
