Besides building a relatively autonomous universe, each literary work transcends its textual dimension to carry on a dialogue with other discourses. With the treatment given to tobacco as the starting point, this paper aims at drawing dialogue lines between the anthropologist’s discourse in Contrapunteo cubano del tabaco y el azúcar of Fernando Ortiz, and that of the chronicle in Puro humo of Guillermo Cabrera Infante. In this sense, we attempt to show the extend to which literature deconsecrates the discourse of historiography and the traditional anthropological and social studies in order to give way to a different praxis. The factors that determine the Caribbean cultural field are approached from the conception of the Caribbean as a rhythmic area in terms of Antonio Benítez Rojo, of the proposals of Pierre Bordieu about cultural field, of the observations of Michael Foucault on discourse and power and the author’s category, as well as the definitions of the literary of Jonathan Culler and the contributions about social class of Jesús Martín-Barbero. Regarding the definition of the particular Cuban intellectual field, our reading is guided by the work of Alberto Abreu Arcia. Gerard Genette allows us an apporach to the paratexts of these Works and the Works of Díaz Bild, Kenna Ravenet and Álvaro Navarro guide us with regards to the treatment of humor.
