Abstract

CONTRERAS, Freddy et al. Diabetes e Hipertensión Aspectos Clínicos y Terapéuticos. AVFT [online]. 2000, vol.19, n.1, pp.11-16. ISSN 0798-0264.

Diabetes Mellitus is a frequent public health problem by itself and it is increasing. The prevalence in most of the Western countries varies between 2 to 5% and is increasing rapidly in Asiatic countries principally in the change in diabetic habits during the last years. The Diabetes Mellitus Hypertension Association describes 60 to 65% of patients who presents the first condition. In hypertension there is an insulin resistance, in skeletal muscle principally, involved in the conversion of glucose to glycogen; independently from blood flow. The grade of resistance is related with the growth of hypertension and varies according to race. The hiperinsulinemia has been stated and the state of insulin resistance as causas and/or consequence of the hypertension. Indistincly of the type of diabetes, hypertension is 2 to 3 times more common between diabetics than no diabetics. In this article we propose to review the physiopatologial mechanisms involved in the association that causes great incidence morbi-mortality and increases of the incapacity of the population.
