In order to determine pancreatic function and insulin resistance, HOMA ß-cell and HOMA-IR, were applied to 50 volunteers of both sexes, divided in two groups, 25 type 2 diabetics without glicemic control compared with 25 healthy subjects of the same range of age. Plasma glucose for diabetics and healthy volunteers were 11,4 ± 0,9 and 4,8 ± 0,08 mmol/l respectively (p< 0,001). Plasma insulin values were not different 16,8 ± 0,7 µUl/ml for diabetic patients and 15,9 ± 1,7 µUl/ml for control group. HOMA-IR was significantly different (p< 0,001) between two groups (8,6 ± 1,3 diabetic and 3,6 ± 0,2 control group), meanwhile HOMA-ß cell values were also significantly different (p< 0,001) between both groups (269,6 ± 10,9 control and 59,7 ± 9,9 diabetic group). Our results show that HOMA is a simple, fast and useful tool for Beta-cell and insulin sensitivity measurement for clinical practice purpose. The low price and sensitivity of this test encourage to apply it in epidemiological studies involving large populations with the aim of determine the risk of suffer type 2 diabetes mellitus and monitorize the response to nutritional and pharmacological therapy as well as exercises in type 2 diabetics.
