Sprague Dawley is an experimental rat model used in the evaluation of new drugs and their toxic effects. Through the use of this animal model we are able to generate organ toxicity designs, especially of the liver which is one of the most studied organs. As the serum determination of the specific chemical parameters is an indirect way of evaluating the condition oí the individual and the organ affected, it is necessary to obtain the range of reference values of universal markers of hepatic damage detection. Using a non-experimental design, this study examined the normal serum values of -GT, TGP, Bt, Bd and Tg in adult female Sprague Dawley rats (150-250 g body wt), using optimized human methods. 3 cc of blood was extracted by direct aortic puncture from forty rats after had been killed by chloroform. The samples were centrifuged (15 min), with the serum being separated to determine the established chemical parameters, using commercial manual technique kits. The mean and the standard deviation of the values were calculated, giving the following range of reference values: -GT (16.0 UI/L±7.2), TGP (32.5 UI/L ± 9.5), Bt (0.36 mg/dl ± 0.18), Bd (0.08 mg/dl ± 0.04) and Tg (88 mg/dl ± 30) and a mean per body wt of 203 g ± 21. The similarities and differences between the values obtained in this study and those reported by other researchers suggest that changes in enviroment diet and captivity may modify serum metabolite levels in experimental animals.
