AVFT [online]. 2004, vol.23, n.2, pp.172-181. ISSN 0798-0264.
High blood pressure is a risk factor for Cardiovascular disease and it is considered a public health problem. Arterial Hypertension imposes the heart with a pressure overload which leads to several anatomical and functional compensatory modifications, one of which is development of Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (LVH). It is well known that LVH is an independent cardiovascular mortality risk factor in hypertensive patients. Objectives: a six months duration, randomized, double blind study was designed to evaluate effect of high blood pressure treatment and Echographic Left Ventricular mass modification seen with two different types of antihypertensive drugs (Bisoprolol/HCTZ and Enalapril). Results: Group A (n equal 10) received fixed dose combination Bisoprolol/HCTZ and group B (n equal 9) received Enalapril. After 6 months of treatment both drugs have diminished high blood pressure in the two groups (p<0.05) but to a lesser extent in group B. A significant reduction of left ventricular mass was seen after 3 and 6 months of treatment in the Bisoprolol/HCTZ group (p< 0.05) Reduction of LVH was seen in group B after 6 months of treatment (statistically non significant value). Conclusions: Fixed dose combination of Bisoprolol/HCTZ was more effective than Enalapril in echographically measured reduction of abnormally augmented left ventricular mass in hypertensive patients after 3 and 6 months of treatment.
